APHI 601 - History and Identity Credit Hours: 3
This course examines the formation of historical identity as conditioned by an individual’s historical social and cultural contexts. These contexts include patterns of kinship, racial or ethnic categorization, the construction of gender and sexuality, and social hierarchies or class systems. Other contexts such as language, religion, environment and the body may also be considered. Questions of the mutability and coherence of individual identity in times of social change or cultural crisis will be of special interest, as will the definition of marginal and hybrid identities.
