Mission

The Master of Science in Computer and Information Sciences is designed to offer Citadel Undergraduates an opportunity to attain an accelerated advanced degree in the computer science field while upgrading their skills and knowledge. The accelerated Computer and Information Sciences program is a joint program with the College of Charleston. This program is not available to undergraduates enrolled at other institutions, or who have completed a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree at another institution.

Admission Requirements

  • Completion of the online graduate application along with the non-refundable application fee.
  • Currently matriculated at The Citadel with a declared major in Computer Science (BS degree program).
  • Junior (2A) standing, with at least 60 earned credit hours, an overall GPA of 3.0, and a major GPA of 3.5.
  • Successfully completed the following courses: CSCI 201, CSCI 211, CSCI 202, CSCI 223, CSCI 305, MATH 206, and one additional CSCI course numbered 300 or higher.
  • Submit a statement of purpose with admission materials (700-1000 words).
  • Upon acceptance, the student will hold a provisional acceptance to the graduate program and their status will be probationary.
  • Full-time students in the fifth year are eligible for graduate assistantships when available.
  • Students who have already earned an undergraduate degree are not eligible for the combined program.

Course Requirements

Up to 12 graduate credit hours (four courses) can be applied to undergraduate degree requirements (i.e., double-counted). At most 15 graduate credit hours (five courses) can be earned while under a provisional acceptance. After completing the course requirements for the BS program and having earned a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher with no more than one grade of “C” or lower, the probationary status will be removed. Graduation for the BS degree will continue normally.

Degree Requirements

Please refer to the graduate catalog page for the Computer and Information Sciences, M.S.  degree program for complete MS degree requirements.

Please refer to the undergraduate catalog page for the BS in Computer Science degree program for complete BS degree requirements. As described below, some BS degree requirements may be satisfied through graduate coursework.

Continuance and Graduation

Members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours of undergraduate coursework to be considered for Dean’s List and/or Gold Stars recognition. Graduate school rules for probation apply starting with provisional acceptance. The student will be a full-time graduate student in the fifth year but may elect to spread out the courses to finish as a part-time graduate student. The MS degree must be completed within six years of beginning the first graduate course. At least one third of credit hours must be taken at The Citadel and one third at The College of Charleston.

Location and Types of Courses

Courses in the Citadel/CofC MS in Computer and Information Sciences joint program are taught at the home institution of the instructor. Courses in the program are split approximately 50/50 between The Citadel and CofC. Citadel courses are taught in Thompson Hall. CofC courses are taught at Harbor Walk East building, 360 Concord Street, Charleston, SC 29401. Cadets accepted into the combined program will be placed on special orders to attend evening classes at CofC when their course is taught by a faculty member from that institution. In other situations, some graduate courses are offered online or in a hybrid format. In these cases, cadets accepted into the combined program will be allowed to take these course formats as well.
