Health and Human Performance: Concentration in Exercise Science


Mission Statement

The mission of the MS in Health and Human Performance with the Concentration in Exercise Science is to develop knowledgeable, skilled, and adaptable coaching practitioners capable of providing comprehensive athlete development services across a variety of athlete populations. These services include improving physical performance, enhancing recovery, and applying athlete performance monitoring techniques. Graduates from this concentration will be prepared to assume full-time assistant or head strength and conditioning roles, serving the needs of sport or tactical athletes.

Admission Requirements

  1. Completion of the online graduate application along with the non-refundable application fee.
  2. Submission of an official transcript of the baccalaureate degree directly from each accredited college or university and transcripts from all postgraduate institutions attended.
  3. Submission of three signed letters of recommendation. These may be from faculty members of the applicant’s undergraduate institution and/or from associates in business, government, education, or military service.
  4. Submission of a resume detailing previous work experiences.
  5. A one-page letter describing why you are interested in the concentration in Coaching and Athletic Performance.

A student may be granted provisional admission status whose academic preparation is just slightly below the standard admissions requirement.  Provisionally admitted students complete 6 graduate semester hours in their first semester with a minimum of a 3.5 grade point average will be classified as a regular degree-seeking student and allowed to continue in the program.

Program Outcomes:

1. Health, Exercise, and Sport Science Masters students will receive field experience related to their intended future career

2. Health, Exercise, and Sport Science Masters students will understand, present and conduct research within their field of study.

3. Health, Exercise, and Sport Science Masters students will demonstrate thorough understanding of core curriculum.

Program Requirements


The MS in Health and Human Performance: Concentration in Exercise Science consists of thirty (30) semester credit hours. Eighteen (18) of those credit hours come from core courses from health, exercise, and sport science. Additionally, twelve (12) credit hours are derived from courses specific to the Concentration in Coaching and Athletic Performance, and approved electives. 

Prior to the capstone internship experience, the candidate must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Complete 300 field experience hours, all of which must be documented and meet the criteria set forth by the Department of Health and Human Performance. Prior to beginning field experience hours, candidates must pass the FBI/SLED background check requiring all including fees, social security card copy, and fingerprints.
  2. Apply for an experience that is approved by the Department of Health and Human Performance no less than 2-months prior to the start date.
  3. Gain any necessary clearance documentation required to be permitted at the internship site.
  4. Successfully pass the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F), or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
  5. Obtain a current CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

Graduate Requirements (Non-Credit Bearing)


  • Credit Hours: 0
  • Successful completion of the CSCS certification from the NSCA

  • Proof of current CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association
