The B.S. degree is intended for those students who wish to continue onto graduate school in chemistry, enter into the industrial sector with their bachelors degree, or pursue a MD/PhD or other health related fields after graduation. Students may also elect to complete the American Chemical Society Approved Program, which documents their status as professional chemsists and may provide other benefits (see description below).
Student Learning Outcomes
Students majoring in chemistry with the B.S. degree will
- Demonstrate knowledge in the general theories of Chemistry in all five major areas: analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry
- Apply quantitative skills in solving complex problems
- Write effectively on chemical topics using correct grammar and a style appropriate for the discipline of chemistry
- Speak effectively on chemical topics in a format appropriate for the discipline of chemistry
American Chemical Society Approved Program
Students who wish to pursue research-related careers (chemical, medical, industrial) should consider taking the courses to complete the American Chemical Society approved program. Students completing these additional requirements are awarded a certificate by the American Chemical Society documenting their status as professional chemists and are frequently given preferential treatment as candidates for professional positions. In order to qualify for this distinction, students must complete all the requirements for the B.S. in Chemistry (see the Map and requirements below) and these additional courses:

- Approved Electives: BIOL 290 , BIOL 308 , BIOL 421 , BIOL 424 , BIOL 427 ; CHEM 402 , CHEM 404 , CHEM 410 ; CSCI 205 ; MATH 303 , MATH 335 , MATH 343 , MATH 344 , MATH 381 , MATH 403 , MATH 411 , MATH 422 , MATH 470 ; PHYS 301, PHYS 307 , PHYS 308 , PHYS 315 , PHYS 320 , PHYS 403 , PHYS 405 , PHYS 410 .
- Approved ACS Elective: Students pursuing the ACS accredited degree need to take MATH 234 and CHEM 460 for two of their free electives.
- Students must complete three strand courses, which may be completed in any order: English (ENGS 30X ), History (HISS 30X ), and Social Science (SCSS 30X ).
ROTC Course Requirements:
ROTC course requirements apply to members of the SCCC only:
- Cadets contracted or pursuing a contract should take 8 semesters of ROTC.
- Cadets not contracted or pursuing a contract should take 4 semesters of ROTC Basic and 4 semesters of ROTC fulfilment courses. Available ROTC fulfillment courses are published online annually by the department of Leadership Studies.
- ROTC courses typically carry 1 to 3 hours of credit, depending on the level. ROTC fulfillment courses typically carry 3 hours of credit. See the course descriptions for specific information.
Required For Graduation:
121 credit hours plus successful completion of all RPED, ROTC, and LDRS graduation requirements. ROTC hours (credits, lectures, and labs) vary each semester by military department.
