Students who are interested in pursuing a Chemistry major or minor have multiple options within a Bachelors of Science (BS) degree or a Bachelors of Arts (BA) degree: The Department also offers an American Chemical Society accredited BS degree that prepares students for entry into elite graduate programs, medical schools or industry. Within the BS degree, students may also choose to complete the biochemistry specialization. The BA degree provides a path for students who wish to combine chemical knowledge with specialized career training such a patent law, environmental and/ or industrial regulation, clinical lab work, pharmacology, toxicology, dentistry or advanced medical training. Within the BA degree students may also choose to complete the Clinical or Environmental specialization. The Department also offers a minor in chemistry. Additionally, the department shares a molecular biology and biochemistry minor with the Biology Department. The Department also sponsors an active chapter of the Student Affiliates of The American Chemical Society club. Regardless of which path a student selects; a specific curriculum will be developed in consultation with the student’s academic advisor to fit each student’s specific career goals.

All undergraduate courses taken at The Citadel with a subject prefix of CHEM will count towards the major GPA.

The department occupies Byrd Hall. Within its 52,000 square feet, this facility houses a lecture theater, modern class rooms, laboratories, computer laboratory, and conveniently located stock, preparation, and balance rooms.

Premedical Program

Students who plan to enter medical, pharmacy or dental school should consider majoring in chemistry. Most allied health schools require a minimum of five chemistry courses. Students who plan to enter medical, pharmacy or dental school upon completion of their baccalaureate degrees should acquaint themselves with requirements of the medical schools of their choice and plan their programs accordingly.
