It begins with an introduction to the sound system of Mandarin Chinese (i.e., Pinyin) and then moves onto basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course also aims to introduce students to a variety of aspects of Chinese culture. By the end of the semester, students are expected to (a) have a fairly good pronunciation, (b) recognize and write approximately 200 to 250 characters, and (c) carry out simple conversations. This course is intended for students with no prior experience in the language.
