NURS 303 - Health Policy and Practice


Credit Hours: 4

This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of healthcare policy in the United States. The course provides an overview of health, healthcare and a discussion of whether healthcare is a basic human right or a market commodity. The organization of healthcare is discussed including primary care, specialty care, and tertiary care. Policies and legislation that govern healthcare in the US are explored as well as their impact on access and payment for care. The student is exposed to the role of pharmaceutical industry and how this industry may be driving some of the cost of healthcare in the US. This course has a field experience where the student will select a community or population and explore health implications for the associated individuals and groups.
