English Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs

The English major is designed for students seeking a broad education suitable for careers in such areas as law, business, the ministry, or the armed forces. As a pre-professional degree, English challenges students to think critically and to improve their communication skills.

Course offerings cover the range of literature written in English, from the Middle Ages to our own times. The department also offers classes in creative writing, art, music, and philosophy. In preparing for careers after graduation, every student majoring in English completes at least one advanced writing class and at least one internship in professional communications.

The English major consists of twelve courses (36 credit hours). With a course of studies featuring thirteen general electives, students majoring in English have the flexibility to complete a minor in a complementary field.

All undergraduate courses taken at The Citadel with a subject prefix of COMM and ENGL will count towards the major GPA.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Knowledge of Trends and Authors in Anglophone Literature:  Students will be acquainted with and critically reflect on major trends and authors in English-language literature and, to a lesser extent, in other literatures.
  2. Critical Thinking Skills:  Students will display critical thinking skills appropriate to the variety of professions for which the English Major can prepare them.
  3. Oral and Written Expression Skills:  Students will display proficiency in written and oral expression including use of standard English and the ability to organize and develop multi-paragraph essays.
  4. Research, Analysis, and Citation Skills:  Students will demonstrate skills in research, analysis, and in properly using and documenting material from primary and secondary sources.
