SPAN 422 - Pop Culture in Spanish Identity

Credit Hours: 3

An analysis of the major cultural trends in twentieth-, and twenty-first-century Spain as they relate to its current problems, aspirations, and values. Elements for explanation and discussion are drawn from artistic, literary, religious, geographic, social, and political manifestations.
This course discusses how modern Spanish identity is represented in the media. It includes topics such as the role of women in society, immigration and emigration, other national identities within Spain (Cataluña, Galicia, País Vasco), presence of the Civil War and its consequences, or the current socio-economic situation. All these issues are discussed through the lens of their different representations such as film, music, newspapers, cartoons, or literature and given a context through academic readings.
