HIST 306 - Charleston Development Overview

This course will examine aspects of Charleston’s development from the time of first permanent European settlement through the early nineteenth century. Topics to be covered include early European settlement, relations between newcomers and Native Americans, commercial and cultural developement, architecture, the experiences of enslaved people, Charleston’s role in the larger British Empire, and ways that geography, trade, and expressions of authority shaped the urban landscape.
