HIST 390 - Global Military History Credit Hours: 3
Global Military History examines innovation in military affairs, both in terms of technological and institutional advances. The course examines to major themes: 1) the transformations of innovations over time which includes the transmission of ideas, techniques, and formations from one military system to another; and 2) the relationship between military systems and culture and the larger societies of which they are a part. This approach places military organization and activity in a broader context of civilian society as well as some periods of intellectual history. While one of the goals of the course is to introduce the students to a host of military thinkers and approaches to war-making, another subordinate goal is to demonstrate the interconnectedness of the methods of human organized violence over time and space.
