The Department of Leadership Studies’ purpose is to equip all Citadel students with the knowledge and the tools to be principled leaders. We do this through overseeing all credit-bearing academic leadership courses (LDRS-prefix), the Leadership Studies Minor, as well as through our graduate programs: Master of Science in Leadership, Graduate Certificate in Leadership, and Graduate Certificate in Military Leadership. The mission of the Department of Leadership Studies is to enhance the ability of students from any academic background to perform effectively as principled
leaders in their present or future leadership roles. The program utilizes interdisciplinary courses to engage students in comprehensive learning about leadership in applied contexts. At various points, the curriculum allows students to tailor the focus of their study toward individual and career interests.
The Department oversees credit-bearing academic leadership courses (LDRS-prefix), including LDRS 202 - Principled Leadership in American Government and Society and LDRS 371 - Leadership in Organizations required of all cadets. A minor in Leadership Studies addresses learning, scholarship, and critical thinking about leadership from various analytical perspectives and, as a result, gives students a broad understanding of the nature of effective, ethical leadership. This academic minor complements the “leadership laboratory” aspect of cadet life at The Citadel. All upper level Leadership Studies courses and Leadership minor courses serve as ROTC fulfilment classes for juniors and seniors in residence.
Leadership Experience Labs and Seminars
The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics offers a variety of leadership and professional development programs for all cadets. These experiences are a key component of an integrated curriculum designed to help students develop leadership competencies through community service and engagement, exercise ethical decision-making, and integrate principled leadership in their future professional careers. Successful completion of these experiences constitutes an important graduation requirement.
In support of strategic commitments to service learning and development of principled leaders, The Citadel’s annual Leadership Day is an opportunity for Citadel students to engage in service projects, seminars, and trainings. All activities on Leadership Day provide students with meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
For further information about leadership experience labs and seminars, please contact the Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics, located in Richardson 201 (behind Bond Hall), (843) 953-5815 or email krausecenter@citadel.edu
