Mathematics Major

The B.S. program in mathematics is designed to prepare our students to pursue graduate work in pure or applied mathematics and to provide the background which will enable them to use mathematics in the behavioral sciences as well as in more technical areas.

The course of study leading to the B.S. with a major in mathematics includes 18 semester hours of general electives. The required courses are 3 or 4 semester hours of computer science (CSCI 205  or CSCI 201  & CSCI 211 ) and the following 40 semester hours of core mathematics: MATH 121 , MATH 131 , MATH 132 , MATH 206 , MATH 231 , MATH 234 , MATH 240 STAT 261 , MATH 303 , MATH 403 , MATH 470 , MATH 495 .

All undergraduate courses taken at The Citadel with a subject prefix of MATH will count towards the major GPA.

In addition, the student must select 12 hours of approved Mathematics Electives from selected courses among the mathematics courses numbered at the 300 or 400 level.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Mathematics program will achieve the following outcomes:

  • Mathematics Subject Matter Knowledge – Students will exhibit breadth and depth in their content knowledge of mathematics subject matter
  • Problem Solving Skills – Students will demonstrate the ability to solve problems and synthesize information
  • Written Communication – Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate scientific concepts in writing
