Chemistry, B.A. - Environmental Concentration

The Chemistry B.A. - Environmental Concentration is intended for those students who wish to study the chemistry that occurs in natural spaces. Environmental Chemistry is a specialized area of Analytical Chemistry requiring a strong understanding of the fate of chemical species in the air, soil, and water and how these chemicals move through the environment and biosphere. Environmental chemists serve as compliance officers in industry, regulatory specialist in state and federal labs, work as environmental consultant for emerging technologies or conduct environmental research.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students majoring in chemistry with the B.A - Environmental Concentration. degree will
- Demonstrate knowledge in the general theories of Chemistry in four of the five major areas: analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry
- Apply quantitative skills in solving complex problems
- Write effectively on chemical topics using correct grammar and a style appropriate for the discipline of chemistry
- Speak effectively on chemical topics in a format appropriate for the discipline of chemistry
- Apply their knowledge of chemical analysis, and environmental science to solve environmentally relevant questions.

Note:
- The BA also requires 14 credit hours of advanced electives from the following list of courses: CHEM 300 , CHEM 302 , (CHEM 305 /CHEM 315 ), (CHEM 306 /CHEM 316 ), CHEM 401 , CHEM 402 , CHEM 403 , CHEM 409 , CHEM 410 , CHEM 460 , CHEM 419 , or PHYS 204 /PHYS 222 .
- The Environmental Concentration requires three additional courses selected from BIOL 140 /BIOL 141 , BIOL 292 , BIOL 406 , BIOL 409 , BIOL 425 , BIOL 426 , PHYS 243 , PHYS 343 .
- Students must complete four strand courses, which may be completed in any order: English (ENGS 30X ), History (HISS 30X ), Social Science (SCSS 30X ), and Science (NTSS 30X )
ROTC Course Requirements:
ROTC course requirements apply to members of the SCCC only:
- Cadets contracted or pursuing a contract should take 8 semesters of ROTC.
- Cadets not contracted or pursuing a contract should take 4 semesters of ROTC Basic and 4 semesters of ROTC fulfilment courses. Available ROTC fulfillment courses are published online annually by the department of Leadership Studies.
- ROTC courses typically carry 1 to 3 hours of credit, depending on the level. ROTC fulfillment courses typically carry 3 hours of credit. See the course descriptions for specific information.
Required For Graduation
121-129 credit hours plus successful completion of all RPED, ROTC, and LDRS graduation requirements. ROTC hours (credits, lectures, and labs) vary each semester by military department.
